Standard commercial cooling towers operate in relatively clean environments. However, for industries such as steel manufacturing, sugar refining, and power generation, the conditions are harsh. High suspended solids, oil contamination, and extreme temperatures will destroy standard PVC cooling tower fill in a matter of months.

The Failure of Film Fill in Dirty Water

Film fill works by creating narrow passageways. When water contains fibers, oil, or sand (common in the Middle East), these passageways act as a filter, trapping debris. This creates a "mud cake" that blocks airflow and adds immense weight to the tower structure, leading to potential collapse.

The Solution: Splash Grid Fill

For these environments, Splash Grid Fill is the engineering solution. Unlike film fill, splash grids do not rely on narrow channels. Instead, they use layers of grids or bars to break falling water into droplets.

Mechanism: The open structure allows sludge, sand, and biological growth to wash right through into the basin, where it can be filtered out. This "self-cleaning" nature makes Splash Grid Fill indispensable for dirty water applications.

Material Science: PVC vs. PP Cooling Tower Fill

Temperature is the second killer of fill media.

  • PVC Limit: Standard PVC softens at roughly 55°C-60°C.
  • The PP Advantage: For process water exceeding 60°C, or environments with chemical aggression, PP Cooling Tower Fill (Polypropylene) is required. PP grids can withstand continuous operation at 80°C and are highly resistant to acids, alkalis, and oils.
